Nomakholwa Grace Hlangu

I was born in Butterworth in the Eastern Cape in 1977, the youngest to a large family. I matriculated from Cunningham High School. After my twin boys were born, I moved to Cape Town to work as a in housekeeper and au pair to a family with two children. In 2004 my mother passed away and my children needed to live with me in Cape Town. We moved to Khayelitsha to stay with my sister’s family. I have always loved small children and when I heard from a friend that there was a position for an assistant at Rainbow Nursery School I was eager to apply.

In January 2005 I began my journey as an assistant to Jenny. In this time I have grown in understanding and love of children, and the knowledge of the importance of this work. My special time is observing and facilitating the children’s outdoor free play. I love to watch how their play develops and blossoms. Every year is different; just when you think you know it all, there is something new to learn.
